Bathing Tips for Seniors

Bathing is an everyday task that seems harmless, but it can be a huge risk for seniors. Some seniors are already classified as a fall-risk, so it is important to take all precautions to have safe shower experiences. Here are some tips to help reduce accidents:

  • Invest in a shower chair – A chair is especially helpful for anyone unsteady on their feet. It allows for stability so the individual can sit down if they are feeling tired.
  • Install rails or grab bars – It is imperative that railing is installed to allow for support when they need it. Slips often happen in the shower, so if there is a need, they can grab onto a bar for help.
  • Opt for a walk-in shower or tub – Tub showers make it difficult to easily get in and out. Install a walk-in shower or tub to avoid any trips.
  •  Install a hand-held showerhead – Normal showerheads can be hard to reach for seniors. Choose a showerhead that can be taken out for handheld use.
  • Eliminate fall risks – Take out any rugs that may move around and clear the bathroom of hazards. Use non-slip bathmats in the shower to help provide traction.

Bathing can be dangerous for seniors if the bathroom is not setup for safety. Review your senior loved one’s home or yours to avoid falls at all costs!
