Senior Hikes in Southern California

You’re never too old or too young to go on a leisurely hike. Here in the Los Angeles area, there are beautiful hikes for all ages and different health levels. Read this article for our 3 suggestions.

For some reason, after hearing the word ‘hiking,’ the first images that pop up into most people’s heads entail highly skilled mountain men with backpacks that reach down to the back of their knees while holding their long, sturdy hiking sticks. That, however, shouldn’t be case. The act of hiking simply involves a long walk- usually along a scenic route. And while we first imagine hiking to be meant strictly for the highly skilled with great stamina, we couldn’t be any more wrong. People of all ages are equally qualified to hike- the young, the middle-aged, and- believe it or not- seniors!

I should preface this blog by stating that although I have been on numerous hikes in the Los Angeles Area, I am by no means an expert hiker. With that said, I have come across several trails that were beginner level hikes which I feel would be perfect for any adventurous seniors looking for a change of scenery or just looking to add more steps in their daily exercise routines.

1. Paradise Falls (Thousand Oaks) – 2.15 mile out-and-back
There is an immediate descent down to a waterfall at the bottom of the trail but it is fairly gradual. The hike is short and sweet and also has a nice waterfall to visit as an award for your great efforts.

2. Runyon Canyon (Los Angeles-Hollywood Hills) – 1.9 mile loop
Although this is sometimes a difficult trail to run, it is actually a very easy trail to walk through. If you are a pet lover, this trail happens to be dog-friendly as well! Not only can you catch a glimpse of the famous Hollywood sign, but if you’re lucky enough you may be able to spot a celebrity or two from your favorite movies here.

3. Chesebro Wildlife Trail (Santa Monica Mountains) – 2 mile loop
This is a fairly easy hike-a flat trail with tons of scenic views and wildlife. This trail is extremely family-friendly. If you’re looking for a quiet walk with tons of foliage, then this hike is perfect.
