Heat Safety Tips

Excessive heat warnings are spreading. As temperatures increase, it is important to stay safe.

Top 5 Tips to stay safe during periods of excessive heat

  1. Steer clear of parked cars – Never leave children, dependent adults, pets, or the elderly in a heated parked car. Temperatures can rise to deadly levels in a short period of time.
  2. Stay hydrated – Drink water even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid any drinks with caffeine, alcohol, or sugar.
  3. Stay in air-conditioned areas as much as possible. There are local cooling centers and additional resources for the communities.
  4. Limit outdoor activity to mornings or evenings – Go outdoors when it’s the coolest and stay in shady areas.
  5. Cover yourself up – Make sure to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher at least 30 minutes prior to going out. Wear loose clothing and wide brimmed hats when outdoors to stay cool.
